There is still a role for traditional strategic planning. Our strategic positioning process typically involves two steps: a divergent exploration of core competences and enduring market forces followed by a more convergent analysis. This analysis must then be synthesized into linear action plans and performance metrics that can be managed. Our role is this process is to facilitate good executive decision-making, depoliticize the process, and ensure that sound methodology is followed. Even an average strategic plan can be successful if implemented brilliantly, but the most brilliant strategic plan sitting in a three ring binder on a shelf will fail if not executed properly.
